benzodiazepines.
Other drug classes can also be added if required, for example
Phencyclidine, Pethidine and barbiturates.
 |
Research and Development |
LabPlus has established an on‑going programme to
develop new tests to cover existing and emerging patterns of drug abuse
in New Zealand.
 |
What
Sort of Sample is required? |
For most drug testing a urine sample is required
that has been collected in a monitored process in accordance with the
Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZ4308.
NOTE For alcohol. It is recommended that workplace screening for
alcohol be performed using a calibrated breathalyser, followed‑up by a
blood test where indicated.

Test
Methods |
|
| Detection of Sample
Adulteration Adulteration is
the deliberate adding of chemicals or water to the urine sample to mask
the detection of any drugs that might be present. All samples are
checked for dilution and contamination. In many cases LabPlus will be
able to test for the presence of a drug in spite of attempts to
influence the result.
Initial
screening is performed using immunoassay techniques (Cedia). These assays
have a high sensitivity in detecting concentrations of drugs and their
metabolites in urine.
The
result is determined as either a negative or a tentative positive
result; requiring confirmation. No further action is taken with negative
results
Confirmatory Testing
Positive Results ‑
confirmatory testing on a tentative positive result is performed, using
Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), in accordance with the
Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZ4308:2008) and the American recommendations set for urine drug
testing.
Internationally Agreed Cut off levels are determined for each drug
tested, for both the screening and confirmatory tests. If the level of
the drug is below the cut‑off point it will be regarded as negative.
These cut off
levels have been set in the Australian/New Zealand standards and are designed to
identify recent or significant drug use.
GCMS Irrefutable
Both the American
recommendations and the Australian/New Zealand standard dictate that GCMS is
mandatory if the results are to be considered 'irrefutable'.
Test Turn Around Times
Results
of screening tests for drugs of abuse will generally be available within
24 hours of being received, Monday to Friday. Results may be available
by secure fax, accessed by telephone enquiry using a PIN number or by
post.
NOTE When results are delivered by postal service allow an extra
1 to 2 days.
Confirmatory test results are available 48 to 72 hours after screening
results.

LabPLUS School Programme |
Secondary Schools are
experiencing a greater awareness of drug and alcohol abuse by their
students both in and out of school. Part of the school’s policy on
managing this trend may be the requirement to have the student’s urine
tested for drugs especially cannabis and occasionally methamphetamine
(P). This could be for counselling and compliance reasons, especially
where an agreement has been developed between the student, their parents
or guardians and the school. This non-punitive approach is proving to be
successful within schools where a supportive counselling programme has
been adopted with students who have been identified as either having an
established drug habit or are experimenting with drugs. A robust, but
non-evidential (cannot be used for legal purposes) process for this type
of testing has been developed by LabPLUS, Auckland City Hospital.
It will include processes designed to eliminate cheating and a kit that
will facilitate the simple collection of a sample within the school.
